The beginning!

Well, we have been discussing the possibility of homeschooling for about four years now.  It was never something I was interested in until after I had my daughter. I am not opposed to public education in the least, I am a product of public education and later worked as a public school band/orchestra teacher.  There are many good things that come from a public school. That said, there are a other things that are obviously not ideal. We were inspired to consider homeschooling by a growing community of people who were choosing to educate at home for secular reasons. I am excited to incorporate foreign language from the beginning, teach piano skills as part of our music curriculum, spend time outdoors for science and physical education, and learn life and craft skills from our community - including older family members.

I have plans for a fairly relaxed year of 4k ahead. I just found a great seasonal curriculum at weefolkart.com that I intend to try out this fall.  In addition to that I will use several workbooks that I selected.  We plan on doing a lot of reading, cooking, and craft time.  We will incorporate math  (numbers, patterns, shapes etc.) as often as possible.    This blog will be my place for keeping a "journal" of sorts.  It will not be a comprehensive log of everything we do, and is not a suggested curriculum for anyone else.

Perhaps the biggest reason I want to try homeschooling our children, is that I want to model that learning is life-long it can happen anytime and anywhere. "Homeschool" won't be really all that different from what we have already done with our children - it's just that now we will be keeping our eyes on the state standards and expected curriculum and incorporating that material as well.

Thanks for joining us!
